21720 Allen Road, also known as 21000 Wildflower Boulevard, is a movie theater building located on Wildflower Boulevard near Allen Road in Woodhaven, Michigan. Opened in 2009, the theater was originally operated by Emagine Entertainment. AMC Theatres acquired the cinema in early 2017, and closed it in 2020. The theater was soon repurchased by Emagine Entertainment, and will reopen in the spring of 2021.

The 21000 Wildflower Boulevard address was only used in early advertisements for Emagine Woodhaven, and its legal address has always been 21720 Allen Road.

History[edit | edit source]

Plans for a ten-screen movie theater were first pitched by Emagine Entertainment site developer John Goldstein in 2008 to be constructed near the intersection of Allen Road and Hayden Drive, but a request to rezone the area from industrial to commercial was rejected by the Woodhaven City Council after complaints from nearby residents that the site was too far off from the city's main commercial district. Emagine Entertainment then settled for a location at the northern edge of the commercial district. The cinema building was given an industrial theme by Goldstein as a result of its location across the Canadian National Dearborn Subdivision railroad line from the Ford Woodhaven Stamping Plant, with a concrete facade and stone and brick patterns on the front. Due to then-current economic conditions, securing $10 million for the project was difficult until the company got support from Citizens Bank of Flint.

The ten-screen, 1,600-seat, 42,000-square-foot (3,900 m2) Emagine Woodhaven theater opened at 6 p.m. on June 18, 2009, as Emagine Entertainment's 4th location, with a benefit for Oakwood Southshore Medical Center’s Karen Colina Wilson Breast Care Center. Following the event, the theater opened to the general public the following day, June 19, with showings of The Proposal This is a link to a Wikipedia article, Year One This is a link to a Wikipedia article, The Taking of Pelham 123 This is a link to a Wikipedia article, Land of the Lost This is a link to a Wikipedia article, The Hangover This is a link to a Wikipedia article, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian This is a link to a Wikipedia article, Terminator Salvation This is a link to a Wikipedia article, Angels & Demons This is a link to a Wikipedia article, Star Trek This is a link to a Wikipedia article, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine This is a link to a Wikipedia article.[1][2][3]

Emagine Woodhaven closed at 4:15 p.m. on April 9, 2017, with a final 3:40 p.m. showing of The Boss Baby This is a link to a Wikipedia article, and its control was then transferred to AMC Theatres, marking the chain's second reentry into the Downriver area. The theater reopened on April 14 as AMC Woodhaven Village 10.[4] Soon afterward, AMC Theatres undertook a major renovation of the cinema, including new recliners, new new sight and sound equipment, and a MacGuffins bar. The renovation was completed by December 2017.[5] The renovation, however, did not prevent the theater from being unprofitable for AMC Theatres, and AMC Woodhaven Village 10, which had already been temporarily closed at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic This is a link to a Wikipedia article, officially closed on September 27, 2020, though the announcement was only confirmed days later by AMC Theatres public relations manager Ryan Noonan.[6]

On March 11, 2021, Emagine Entertainment repurchased the vacant theater, and plans to reopen it later that spring under its original Emagine Woodhaven name.[7]
