2607 North Downer Avenue is a commercial building located at the northwest corner of Downer Avenue and Belleview Place, in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Before the 1930 Milwaukee addressing system reform, the location's address was 583 Downer Avenue.[2] Built in 1909, the building was home to a series of chain and independent grocery stores between 1929 and 1998. An Osco Drug pharmacy opened in 1999, which was converted into the present occupant, CVS Pharmacy #8767, in 2006.

History[edit | edit source]

The current building at 2601-2607 North Downer Avenue was built in 1909.[1]

A&P opened a food store at 583 Downer Avenue on July 8, 1929.[3] The store was subsequently remodeled into a modernized self-service A&P Food Mart, which reopened on September 12, 1938.[4] On April 19, 1946, retired insurance manager Forrest Post collapsed at the store, and died shortly after.[5]

By 1949, the location was home to Gritzmacher's Super Market.[6] By 1953, it became Morgan's IGA.[7] A Sentry Foods store opened in the building on January 25, 1967.[8]

Jewel-Osco first attempted to open a Osco Drug store in the building in 1994, but abandoned the plan after protests from local residents who felt the pharmacy would generate too much traffic.[9] Osco ultimately succeeded in purchasing the building in July 1998, and the Sentry Foods store closed at the end of September. Osco Drug opened in the building in the spring of 1999,[10] and was converted into a CVS Pharmacy after that chain purchased all standalone Osco Drug locations in 2006.[11] The current occupant of 2607 North Downer Avenue, CVS Pharmacy #8767, officially opened on June 2, 2006.[12]
