2630 South Green Bay Road is the address of a commercial building in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, just outside the city limits of Racine. The building contains two retail spaces, currently occupied by Michaels #9192 and Office Depot #3260. The site was briefly occupied by Bailey's Garden Center from 1992 to 1993. The current building was constructed in 1994 for Best Buy #29, which moved out in 2009.

History[edit | edit source]

Prior to 1985, the property that is now 2630 South Green Bay Road was owned by the Racine County government. In January 1985, the county agreed to sell the 4.7-acre (1.9 ha) property to the Best Products catalog showroom chain, alongside another land deal selling the property that would become a Menards hardware store at 2710 South Green Bay Road.[3] The Best Products showroom was originally intended to be constructed within the year and open in November 1985. However, Best Products was facing significant financial problems at the time, and in July 1985, the company announced that the opening of its Racine location would be delayed until August 1986,[4] a week before the store's construction was canceled entirely.[5]

In August 1992, the property was purchased by Bailey's Garden Center, a garden center in Gurnee, Illinois which had chosen Racine to be the site of its second gardening store.[6] Bailey's opened later in 1992, but closed about a year later after the owner suffered a severe heart attack.[7] In April 1994, Bailey's real estate agent proposed building a 46,968-square-foot (4,363.5 m2) Media Play electronics store, but the Mount Pleasant zoning board turned down the proposal, as it planned only 261 parking spaces, less than the required minimum for such a store of 313 parking spaces.[8]

In August 1994, Best Buy announced that it would relocate its Racine store from Regency Point Shopping Center to a newly-constructed building on the former Bailey's site.[7] Best Buy #29 opened in the new building on November 17, 1994, with a grand opening ceremony the following day.[9] Circuit City #3177 opened next door to the store in 2000, in Southland Center, a shopping center which had replaced the former Menards store. After Circuit City's bankruptcy, Best Buy decided to move its Racine store into the former Circuit City space, although the space was about 25% smaller than its existing store.[10]

After Best Buy relocated in October 2009, the building's owner, CSM Investors, decided to divide the building into two retail spaces. By December 2010, Office Depot and Michaels were lined up to fill the two new spaces. Office Depot relocated from its store at Racine Centre, while Michaels moved from its location at 5543 Durand Avenue.[1] Michaels entered into a lease agreement with CSM Investors in March 2011.[11] Michaels #9192 and Office Depot #3260 have been the two tenants of the building since 2011.
