3200 Greensboro Avenue is a building located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The 24,437 square foot building was first built in 1992 for Townsend Magnolia Nissan BMW before the Nissan half moved to Skyland East Boulevard, and would house a used car dealership under the Townsend Automotive umbrella before becoming the relocated home of Tuscaloosa Fire Station 5 in 2020.

History[edit | edit source]

Townsend Magnolia Nissan BMW (1992-2010)[1][edit | edit source]

3200 Greensboro was built to house Townsend Magnolia Nissan BMW in 1992, and the dealership operated for 18 years until the Nissan half moved out in September of 2010. The following month, that dealership, now named Townsend Nissan, opened at its new address at 2620 Skyland East Boulevard, the former site of another car dealership, Madden Lincoln Mercury Volvo (Madden closed in spring 2009). A Subaru dealership was planned to open at 3200 Greensboro, but plans fell through due to unknown reasons.[2]

Townsend BMW (2011-2016)[3][edit | edit source]

After Townsend Nissan moved out, the dealership, now named Townsend BMW, stayed at the site for another 5 years, closing in 2016.

Townsend Automotive (2017-2018)[4][edit | edit source]

Tuscaloosa Fire Station 5 (2020-)[edit | edit source]

In 2020, Tuscaloosa Fire Station 5 moved to 3200 Greensboro after the City of Tuscaloosa voted to purchase the site for $2.3 million and make it the fire station's new home last August (at the time, it was located at Fire Station 1 on 15th Street). According to Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith, the move was done so that the work for the other nearby fire stations can be reduced and response times can be reduced, as data from the Department of Transportation shows that the railroad tracks south of Greensboro Avenue are blocked 37 times a day, resulting in potential delays of three to six hours. In addition, the logistics center, fire marshal's office, EMS division, fleet service, and training center were all relocated to the new fire station at Greensboro, centralizing all these functions in one facility.[5]

On the morning of July 8, 2020, free face coverings were given out to Tuscaloosa residents at the site.[6]
