622 3 Mile Road is a restaurant building on 3 Mile Road, near Erie Street in Racine, Wisconsin. Built for a Famous Recipe Fried Chicken restaurant in 1980, the building suffered a major fire in 1991 and was remodeled into a Hardee's location the following year. Since 2019, the building has housed one of Blue Bear Bakery's two locations in Racine.
History[edit | edit source]
Famous Recipe Fried Chicken/Hammes' All-American Chicken (1980–1991)[edit | edit source]
On November 8, 1979, the site was purchased by Dr. James Hammes.[1] A 2,000-square-foot (190 m2), 45-seat restaurant building was constructed on the property, for a Famous Recipe Fried Chicken restaurant franchised by Hammes and William M. Wells. Managed by Hammes' nephew Jay, the restaurant opened on November 3, 1980.[2] The Hammes family opened Racine's second Famous Recipe restaurant at 2815 Durand Avenue in 1984.[3] In February 1987, the Hammes bought out their franchise agreement with the Famous Recipe chain, and their two restaurants were renamed Hammes' All-American Chicken.[4]
In the early morning hours of October 30, 1991, a severe fire caused $250,000 in damages to the restaurant, nearly destroying the building.[5]
Hardee's (1992–2004?)[edit | edit source]
Hammes sold the property on February 27, 1992, to "NC I and NC II",[1] an entity representing Hardee's Management Group, a Hardee's franchisee based in Racine. In April, Hardee's announced it would remodel the damaged building into an 80-seat "Hardee's Mini" restaurant,[6] its second location in the Racine area after its Mount Pleasant restaurant at 1235 South Green Bay Road. The restaurant opened at the end of June 1992.[7][8]
On June 22, 1998, boxes of playground equipment at the neighboring KinderCare daycare at 700 3 Mile Road caught fire, and seven Hardee's workers successfully stopped the fire. The Racine Fire Department recognized their effort at a ceremony the following month, where five of the workers received public service awards (the other two did not attend the ceremony).[9]
Fohr's Catering (2004–2019?)[edit | edit source]
By March 2004, the Hardee's location had closed.[10] On September 30, 2004, the property was sold to Fohr's Catering.[1]
On July 29, 2014, a Fohr's Catering van was involved in a collision with an SUV in Caledonia. The Fohr's driver sustained serious injuries in the crash.[11] Fohr's Catering LLC was legally dissolved on April 18, 2019.[12]
Blue Bear Bakery (2019–present)[edit | edit source]
Married couple Joe Schulte and Tesa Santoro-Schulte, owners of Blue Bear Bakery at 2920 Taylor Avenue, purchased the building from Fohr's Catering on January 4, 2019.[1] Blue Bear Bakery's second location opened in the building on July 30, 2019.[13]
