The Corinne Reid-Owens Transit Center is a bus and train station located between State Street and Liberty Street in Racine, Wisconsin. Centered around a historic train station building, it is the hub of Racine's RYDE bus system. Since the creation of the transit center in 2004, the station has never been served by passenger trains, and efforts to expand the Metra Union Pacific / North Line to reach the station have so far failed.

History[edit | edit source]

The Racine Depot was built in 1901 by the Chicago & Northwestern Railway. Rail service to the station ended in 1971, but the station has been particularly well preserved and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 2001, as part of a redevelopment effort along State Street, the city of Racine pushed for service to the station to be reinstated, and began planning to move the central transfer point in the city's bus system from Monument Square to the State Street depot.[1]

The first buses served the new transit center on July 26, 2004, starting at noon.[2] On December 11, 2010, the center was renamed for Racine civil rights activist Corinne Reid-Owens, who attended an unveiling ceremony held that day.[3]
