The Home Depot #4926, also known as Racine #4926, is a Home Depot home improvement store located at High Ridge Centre, 2429 South Green Bay Road, Racine, Wisconsin.[1][2] The store opened on August 24, 2000, taking the place of the former Builders Square #1362, which had closed the previous year.[3]

History[edit | edit source]

A Home Depot store was originally announced for the Racine area in May 1999, to be located at the northwest corner of Green Bay Road and Washington Avenue in Mount Pleasant, as the main anchor of the proposed Prairie Crossing shopping center.[4] Local residents protested the plan, arguing that the development would add heavy traffic to the intersection of Green Bay Road and Washington Avenue, already "the state's busiest intersection outside of Milwaukee".[5] Despite the controversy, the Mount Pleasant Town Board initially approved the plan in July 1999.[6]

However, as opposition grew from local residents, the Racine County Board reversed the town's decision in August by rejecting the zoning changes necessary for the shopping center's construction.[7] The site where Prairie Crossing would have been built is now home to the Mount Pleasant Village Center, with a Kohl's department store occupying roughly the space where the Home Depot would have been located.

Home Depot retooled its plans in October 1999, when the bankrupt Hechinger Company announced it was selling the properties of dozens of its former Builders Square stores, including that of the High Ridge Centre location in Racine.[8] Home Depot began renovating the former Builders Square building in March 2000 and opened the store in August.[3]
