Walmart originated from a chain of [[Ben Franklin (company)|Ben Franklin]] variety stores operated by {{w|Sam Walton}} in northwest Arkansas. The number of [[Walmart Discount Store]]s, as they are now known, peaked at 2,133 in 1996 and has since declined to 439.
