13311 Eureka Road is the address for the east half of a building on Eureka Road in Southgate, Michigan. Built in 1962 as Southgate's first Kmart store, it later housed Office Depot, and currently, Dunham's Sports #9131.
History
Kmart #4021 (1962–1995)
The first Downriver Kmart, store #4021, opened for business at 10 AM on November 26, 1962. The building was 131,767 square feet, and was one of only a few Kmart locations to contain a back mezzanine, but it was the chain's only location to feature a full-sized furniture department. The initial store manager was John E. Balauger.
The store permanently closed on January 10, 1995, following a storewide 75% clearance sale.[1]
Incidents
- On Thanksgiving weekend in 1976, a baby, less than two weeks old, was found inside a Salvation Army drop box at the entrance. The infant, 4 pounds 11 ounces at birth, was rushed to Wyandotte General Hospital.[2]
