History[edit | edit source]
Kmart #4021 (1962–1995)[edit | edit source]
The first Downriver Kmart, store #4021, opened for business at 10 AM on November 26, 1962. The building was 131,767 square feet (12,241.6 m2), and was one of only a few Kmart locations to contain a back mezzanine, but it was the chain's only location to feature a full-sized furniture department. The initial store manager was John E. Balauger.
The store permanently closed on January 10, 1995, following a storewide 75% clearance sale, having been converted into an outlet store following the opening of the Kmart #4949 supercenter at 3710 Dix Highway in Lincoln Park.[1]
Incidents[edit | edit source]
- On Thanksgiving weekend in 1976, a baby, less than two weeks old, was found inside a Salvation Army drop box at the entrance. The infant, 4 pounds 11 ounces at birth, was rushed to Wyandotte General Hospital.[2]
