History Edit
Danley's Garage World (1978–1980s) Edit
In 1977, the site that would become 2815 Durand Avenue was vacant land owned by Norand Corporation.[1] Danley Lumber Company opened a location in its Danley's Garage World chain of garage-building businesses at the site in January 1978.[2][3] In May 1979, Danley was fined $5,000 after the Wisconsin attorney general's office found that the Racine store used misleading advertising and failed to notify customers about construction delays.[4]
Famous Recipe Fried Chicken/Hammes' All-American Chicken (1984–1994) Edit
On September 27, 1983, Norand Corporation sold the property to James and Jay Hammes,[1] who had received a permit in July to build a Famous Recipe Fried Chicken restaurant on the site.[5] Construction on the restaurant building started in March 1984,[6] and the restaurant opened in June. It became Racine's second Famous Recipe restaurant, with the other one operating at 622 3 Mile Road.[7]
In February 1987, the Hammes bought out their franchise agreement with the Famous Recipe chain, and their two restaurants were renamed Hammes' All-American Chicken.[8] The restaurant was still open in January 1994,[9] but all of the restaurant's equipment was sold at an auction on February 7 of that year.[10]
Caesar's Frozen Custard (1994–2006) Edit
On January 31, 1994, the building was sold to William and Susan Seeger,[1] who opened Caesar's Frozen Custard in the building later that year.[11] On November 1, 1995, the Seegers leased the restaurant to Tim Zold, while they focused on turning a building at 2721 Douglas Avenue into a second Caesar's location.[12] About a decade later, both locations closed,[13] and the Seegers sold the Durand Avenue building to Juan J. Torrijos on August 18, 2006.[1]
Javier's Cuisine (2008–2013) Edit
Javier Ortega, a Mexican-American chef who had previously worked at Jose's Blue Sombrero in Racine, opened Javier's Cuisine in the building in June 2008.[14] The restaurant soon outgrew the space, and Javier's Cuisine moved to 2011 Lathrop Avenue, where it opened on May 4, 2013.[15]
Fiesta Chicken (2013–2018?) Edit
In June 2013, Jorge Torrijos opened Fiesta Chicken in the building.[16]
Domino's Pizza #2085 (2018–present) Edit
Juan Torrijos sold the property to JNB Investments LLC on May 7, 2018.[1] In October 2018, local Domino's Pizza franchisee AMNJ Enterprises announced plans to open a Domino's location in the building.[17]
