History Edit
A&P (1958–1975) Edit
The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company opened an A&P supermarket at the 3901 Fort space in 1958. The store was eventually shuttered in very early January 1975.
Danny's Foods (1975–1999) Edit
Danny's Foods replaced the A&P store by January 26, 1975.[1] When the store was inspected sometime between January 1, 1996, and June 15, 1998, it received neutral rankings.[2]
Select IGA (1999–2001) Edit
In July 1999, Danny's Foods joined the IGA alliance and renamed itself Select IGA.[3] Select IGA was short-lived, and closed in 2001.
Save-A-Lot #970 (2001–2019) Edit
Save-A-Lot opened store #970 in the former Select IGA space in 2002, and built a small addition to the south side of the building. The northern end of the space was split off into a new space with the address of 3899 Fort Street, and immediately began housing Dollar General 8490. The store closed in late 2013 through early 2014 for major remodeling.
Save-A-Lot 970 closed permanently in 2019, consolidating with store #979 at 1716 Fort Street in Lincoln Park.
Recent developments (2019–present) Edit
The space is set to be used as a Spirit Halloween store in autumn 2020.
