History Edit

Early years Edit

Sears would be the first anchor store to open at the Frontier Mall, opening on October 8, 1980, the year prior to the mall's opening. It relocated from their East 17th Street location in Downtown Cheyenne.[2][3]

The ninety-ninth mall CBL & Associates had developed,[4] Frontier Mall mall opened on Wednesday, March 18th, 1981, having a grand opening celebration that continued through Sunday, March 22nd. Many tenants and one anchor also opened on March 18th, including but not limited to Chick-Fil-A, Coach House Cards & Gifts, Fashion Bar,[5] Foxmoor, Maurice's, Orange Julius, Pet City, Radioshack, Salvator's Pizza, Taco's Etc., Waldenbooks, Western Ranchman Outfitters, and Zale's Jewelers.[3] A ribbon cutting was also set to be held at 9:30 AM on March 18th.

Throughout the weeks and months following the mall's opening, many additional tenants would open including but not limited to Fowler's Department Store, KG Men's Wear, Mountain West Savings & Loan, People's Sporting Goods, the six-screen theater, and Wyatt's Cafeteria.[6]

The mall originally included permanent planters throughout the interior concourse, a clock tower near the soon-to-be Joslins, and a large fountain between Fashion Bar and the soon-to-be Dillard's East; it was made up of approximately 77 store fronts including the theater but not including the at-the-time two anchors, Fashion Bar and Sears.[7]

By the time the Frontier Mall opened, JCPenney already announced plans to expand to the Frontier Mall. The store was set to relocate from East 17th Street in Downtown Cheyenne in fall of 1982, but it ended up opening ahead of schedule in July 1982; it held a grand opening on July 7th.[8]

The fourth anchor store, Joslins, was in the process of being built throughout the first half of 1983,[3] opening on Sunday, July 17th, 1983.[9] Specially for the grand opening on opening day, its hours were 10 AM to 5 PM instead of the normal 12 PM to 5 PM times.[10] The store was the first location to be opened outside of Colorado.[11]

In September 1990, Frontier Mall had a grand opening for the newly-added carrousel, located in the area between the soon-to-be Dillard's and existing Fashion Bar.[12]

Renovations and other changes to the mall Edit

Frontier Mall underwent a renovation in 1995 that drastically changed the appearance of the mall nearer to what it looks like today.[1] The renovation included work to make the entrances more visible from the outside, provide more natural light during the daylight hours with redesigned skylights, and replace the brown floor tile with tile made up of a mixture of five colors. The renovation added movable benches and planters, updated the existing restrooms, and added new restrooms near Arby's (which, at the time, was located[13] in then-space-91).[14] In addition, neon lighting was added throughout the mall. A Grand Re-Opening event was set to be held on Thursday, October 26th,[15] during which time a ribbon stretching throughout the mall was cut by the managers of each store.[16]

By the end of 1995, anchor Fashion Bar (now owned by Stage Stores) would be renamed to Stage.[17][18] Cheyenne's Stage lived on until approximately the turn of the century, no longer being listed on Frontier Mall directory as of the time of an archived snapshot from January 24th, 2001 even though it was still listed in the 2001 city directory.[19][20][21]

In the late 1990s, Dillard's would build a new store (which would become known as Dillards (East)) as an additional anchor to the Frontier Mall. The store silently opened on Saturday, March 8th, 1997, and it had a ribbon cutting at the mall entrance at 9:45 AM on Saturday, March 14th. The grand opening celebration continued through March 16th.

In May 1998, Dillard's entered an agreement to acquire Mercantile Stores which includes Joslins; this acquisition left the future of the Cheyenne's Joslins store uncertain.[22][23] It was later determined that the Cheyenne Joslins would not close, but it wasn't clear yet whether the store would be rebranded to Dillard's, creating a scenario where two store fronts share the same name.[24] The store later was converted to Dillard's (known as Dillard's (West)). After the conversion, Dillard's (West) was used mainly for men's clothing, children's clothing, bedding, furniture, seasonal products, and other items not sold at Dillard's (East); Dillard's (East) mainly focused on women's clothing and beauty products.

It wasn't until May 2006 that most (if not all) Gart Sports stores were being rebranded as Sports Authority,[25][26] and that seems to include the Cheyenne, Wyoming location.[27][28] At this point, three years had past since the merger of equals[29] between Sports Authority and Gart Sports,[30][31] and only a few months had past since the new Sports Authority company was taken private.[32]

Returning after being long-since gone from the mall, Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts opened a new store at the Frontier Mall on September 15th, 2011.[33][34] The new Jo-Ann took over several small-format tenants next to Sears including Twills,[35] Natural Lites, Asian Gifts (moved), and Radioshack.[36]

The mall's Sports Authority store (then-formerly Gart Sports) closed in 2016 along with the other remaining Sports Authority locations still open after filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.[37]

Sears was announced in November 2017 to close, liquidation beginning before the end of the year.[38] The store would close in January 2018.[39]

Also during January 2018, Planet Fitness would be setting up their new location in the now-former Sports Authority;[40] the mall's Planet Fitness location opened their doors in February 2018.[41]

JAX Mercantile Company opened a new store in the former Sears called JAX Outdoor Gear, Farm and Ranch in late November 2019.[42] Although labeled as store number 9, it was the eighth full-line JAX store in existence at the time.[43] In December, America's Best Contacts and Eye Glasses remodeled the remaining section of vacant space within the former Sports Authority, opening by the following year.

Dillard's (West) was converted to a clearance center between 2019 and mid-2020, only to close in November 2020; the Cheyenne Dillard's was shifted to only one store, using the space that was previously also known as Dillard's (East). Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom later set up in the former Dillard's (West) space,[44] and the store opened in late May 2023.

Businesses on the periphery Edit

Dotted around the Frontier Mall are several separate buildings that also contain (and have contained) various businesses.

Built next to the northwest parking lot entry on Prairie Avenue, the US Bank branch's building was built in the early 1980s.

Also built in the early 1980s, the building on the corner of today's Frontier Mall Dr and Dell Range Blvd currently is occupied by Verizon and Men's Warehouse. Prior to the current two tenants, a restaurant CB&Potts occupied the building, and prior to CB&Potts, the building was occupied by another restaurant called Sea Galley.

The early to mid-1990s would see the addition of two more buildings. One building would be built near the corner of Powderhouse Rd and Dell Range Blvd, and it's currently occupied by a chain dine-in restaurant called Chilli's. The other building was built between Powderhouse Rd and the northwest parking lot entry on Prairie Avenue; called Frontier Medical Plaza, various medical services are available inside the building. (Frontier Medical Plaza is on its own property separate from Frontier Mall.)

In 2007, yet another two additional buildings, both restaurants, were built along Dell Range Blvd between Stillwater Ave and Driftwood Dr.[45][46] The one to the east became an Olive Garden, and the one to the west became a Chipotle.

Modern context Edit

Today in addition to mall walking[47] from 8 AM to 8 PM each day, the mall features a Children's Play Area outside of the Planet Fitness (inside the mall).
