JCPenney is a chain of department stores in the United States, currently owned by Penney OpCo, LLC. Founded in 1902 by James Cash Penney in Kemmerer, Wyoming, it grew to become one of the largest department store chains in the United States and the flagship chain of the J.C. Penney Company before its bankruptcy in 2020.
Store history[edit | edit source]
In addition to its department stores, JCPenney also sold products through its catalog, which was created after the company acquired the General Merchandise Company and its catalog in 1962. Most JCPenney catalog sales units were located inside JCPenney department stores or Eckerd drugstores, but hundreds of others were operated in other locations by third-party retailers until the catalog business was shut down in 2009.[1][2][3]
