The Home Depot is a chain of 2,296 home improvement warehouse stores in North America operated by The Home Depot, Inc., as of January 31, 2021.[1] The first three Home Depot stores opened in the Atlanta area in 1979. Since The Home Depot, Inc. closed all of its EXPO Design Center and Yardbirds stores in 2009, Home Depot has been the company's only retail brand.[2]
Store history[edit | edit source]
The first four Home Depot stores were all located in Georgia, with the next four opening in south Florida in 1981.[3][4] With the acquisition of Bowater Home Centers in 1984, the chain grew from 22 to 31 locations and entered the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex.[5] Home Depot's store footprint in the United States grew rapidly throughout the first three decades of the chain's history, but since the Great Recession in the late 2000s, it has remained steady at just under 2,000 stores. The company began to expand internationally in 1994 with the acquisition of Aikenhead's Hardware in Canada. Home Depot also expanded into Mexico in 2001, and previously operated stores in Chile (1998–2001), Argentina (2000–2002), and China (2006–2012).[6][7]
Since the opening of the chain's first locations in West Virginia in 2003, Home Depot stores have existed in all 50 U.S. states,[8] as well as the District of Columbia and the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. All 10 provinces of Canada currently have Home Depot stores, with the last province to get one being Newfoundland and Labrador in 2005.[9] There have also been Home Depots in all 32 Mexican states since the chain's first stores opened in Oaxaca and Zacatecas in 2014.[10]
