History

Main Marine and Ski (1967–2013)

A sign, still visible in the building's door as of December 2019, announces that Main Marine and Ski was to close on August 31, 2013.

Main Marine and Ski, a shop selling boats, skiing and marine equipment and accessories, began leasing space in the front of the building,[2] and opened on May 5, 1967.[3]

When the Main Street Bridge immediately south of the building was demolished and replaced in 1996, the store was difficult to access for several months, and Main Street was permanently rerouted, affecting access to the store. The city awarded the store $20,000 in compensation, but the store's owners sued for larger compensation, arguing that it had suffered $237,000 in damages. In February 1998, the store ultimately reached a settlement with the city, and received an additional $15,000 in compensation.[4] In November 1998, the business successfully petitioned the city council to extend a storm sewer onto the property, as well as for permission to add an awning to the building.[5]

Don Meyer, the founder of Main Marine and Ski, retired from the business on September 25, 2002.[6] His son Jim Meyer began renovating the building shortly after taking over the business, with the particular goal of improving the second-floor boat showroom.[7]

The store was successfully sued for $500,000 by the injured parties, part of a $5,000,000 total settlement reached in 2009.[8]

Main Marine and Ski closed on August 31, 2013.
