1122 North Main Street is a building on the southwest corner of North Main Street and Hamilton Street in Racine, Wisconsin. The building has been occupied by Firestone Complete Auto Care store #655244 since 1976.

History[edit | edit source]

The property at 1122 North Main Street replaced a tavern at 1126 North Main Street, which was demolished in 1965, and part of the Kelley Lumber Company yard at 1100 North Main Street, which was demolished in 1967. The area that would become 1122 North Main Street was vacant from then until 1975.

Firestone's original Racine store, located at 709 Wisconsin Avenue, was purchased by Racine County officials in fall 1975 to be demolished for the construction of the Racine County Law Enforcement Center. As a replacement, Firestone had purchased the site at 1122 North Main Street from Sparkle Quick Auto Wash, which was then located at 1100 North Main Street, on March 20, 1975,[1] and began construction on its new store in October.[2] While Firestone had intended to keep operating in the Wisconsin Avenue building until demolition began, the building's roof collapsed on March 16, 1976. A temporary Firestone store was located at 700 Main Street while the company prepared to open its new location. Firestone opened at 1122 North Main Street on June 7, 1976, featuring six service bays and forty parking spaces.[3] A second Firestone location opened in Racine at 4920 Washington Avenue on July 5, 1977.
