A dollar store is a type of variety store which focuses on low-cost general merchandise, often selling each individual item for one dollar or a similar price. While traditional variety stores which offered more limited ranges of items have been in decline for decades, dollar stores have thrived in the 21st century. In the United States, the three largest dollar store chains (Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar) have a cumulative total of more than 33,000 stores as of 2021, compared to a cumulative total of 20,000 between the three of them in 2011.
