Southgate Shopping Center is a shopping center at the southeast corner of Eureka and Trenton Roads in Southgate, Michigan.

History[edit | edit source]

As early as 1952, the Realty Mortgage and Investment Corporation of Detroit announced that a multimillion-dollar Southgate Center would be built at Eureka and Trenton Roads in what was at the time Ecorse Township, and that "space has already been let to many Michigan chain stores, including Kinsel Drugs, Federal's, Wrigley Stores, S.S. Kresge and others," with construction scheduled to begin in the fall of 1952.[1][2]

Farmer Jack #620 opened at Southgate Shopping Center on October 16, 1993.[3] NBD Bank filed an application with the Controller of the Currency on February 18, 1994, for permission to open a branch inside Farmer Jack #620.[4] When Farmer Jack #620 was inspected sometime between January 1, 1996, and June 15, 1998, it received mainly negative rankings.[5]

The Woolworth store closed on January 18, 1994.[6]

Ukazoo Books store #2 opened on October 15, 2011, in the space previously occupied by Borders Express store #928, which had just closed the month before due to Borders' bankruptcy.[7] This location lasted the longest of Ukazoo's expansion locations, though the store closed on December 15, 2013.[8]

The Old Country Buffet restaurant, alongside 81 other locations in the chain, closed abruptly and unexpectedly after a normal day of business on January 18, 2012. The closures were announced the same day as part of a bankruptcy action by the chain.[9][10]

CVS Pharmacy #8213 closed in July 2022.
