Dairy Queen #19578 is a Dairy Queen restaurant located at 2000 South Oneida Street in Appleton, Wisconsin.[1] The location was the first Dairy Queen restaurant in the state of Wisconsin, opening in 1950.

History[edit | edit source]

Until 1950, all rights to the Dairy Queen name in the state were owned by the Dairy Queen Products Company, a family-run dairy product company in Appleton. When the Dairy Queen restaurant chain wanted to expand into Wisconsin in 1949, it was forced into negotiations with the Liebzeit family, which ran the Dairy Queen Products Company as well as the Dairy Queen Bar at 730 West Wisconsin Avenue. The Liebzeits agreed to allow the chain to use the name in the state, and in return were given the opportunity to develop the chain's first Wisconsin franchise in Appleton. Their first franchise opened on June 4, 1950, at 2000 South Oneida Street.[2][3]

When the restaurant first opened, the sale of ice milk This is a link to a Wikipedia article, also known as "low-fat ice cream", was illegal in Wisconsin. The Liebzeits and other early Wisconsin Dairy Queen operators originally only sold high-fat ice cream, and successfully pushed for the law to be changed by 1952.[4] The Leibzeits opened their second Dairy Queen franchise, location #19579, at 1823 North Richmond Street in 1953.

The original building was torn down in November 1993, and was replaced with a larger building which opened on May 19, 1994.[4][5]
