Kmart #4302 was a Kmart discount department store located at Kmart Plaza, 6327 Stewart Road in Galveston, Texas.[1] The store opened on July 17, 1969,[2] and closed on April 15, 2003.[3]

Renovations[edit | edit source]

  • In April 1993, the store would be expanded and remodeled from a pre-1972 full-size model Kmart.[4] A grand reopening ceremony for the renovated store was held on September 9.[5]
  • In 1997, the store would be converted to one of the first 24 Big Kmarts in Texas, with a grand reopening ceremony on November 14.[6]

Incidents[edit | edit source]

  • On September 12, 1993, during the store's first grand reopening ceremony, four youths assaulted a Barney the dinosaur impersonator after they were asked to leave for causing a disturbance in the store.[7] The four youths were fined $200 and were issued other penalties for their crime.[8] Kmart would also face criticism for trying to pass off what they say was a "purple-and-green dinosaur", and not the actual Barney character.[9]
