Former Super Kmart in Winston-Salem while it was abandoned.

Kmart #4950 was a Super Kmart Center discount department store located at 5601 University Parkway in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The store opened 1994 and closed 2002.[1][2] The building was demolished in late 2005 for a cineplex.

On December 8, 1994, Russell William Tucker allegedly shot and killed security guard Maurice Travone Williams and injured two police officers after he was accused of shoplifting clothing from the Super Kmart store. Tucker was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1996, and was days from being executed in 2000 when his lawyer admitted to intentionally sabotaging his client's case. Further investigation revealed evidence suggesting that the court racially discriminated in selecting jurors for the trial, and as of 2020, two attorneys are attempting to have Tucker retried.[3][4]
