Sears #1040 was a Sears department store located at 6233 South Halsted Street in Chicago, Illinois. The store opened November 22, 1934 and closed 1976. "Air-conditioned and artificially lighted throughout, this new Chicago retail unit of Sears, Roebuck and Co. is the 'world's first windowless department store.' A daring departure from conventional design, its beauty and practicability is already acclaimed in the architectural and engineering worlds. Over 225,000 people entered its doors on the opening day, November 22, 1934 - the largest crowd ever to attend the opening of a Sears store."[1]
