The first Super Kmart, Kmart #3786, opened in Medina, Ohio in 1991. The chain's primary competitor was the Walmart Supercenter. After Kmart's first bankruptcy in 2002, the chain stopped opening new stores, and many Super Kmart Centers were converted into regular Kmarts or closed. The last remaining Super Kmart, Kmart #4939 in Warren, Ohio, closed in 2018.
