Walgreens #3022 is a Walgreens drugstore located at 819 North Memorial Drive, at the southeast corner of State Street and Memorial Drive in Racine, Wisconsin.[1] The store opened in 1994, and is located next to the Corinne Reid-Owens Transit Center, as well as across State Street from the State Street Center.
History
In 1965, Lafayette Avenue and Forest Street were linked together just south of State Street, creating a crosstown thoroughfare now known as Memorial Drive. This created a triangular area with both residential and commercial buildings along the southeast corner of State Street and North Memorial Drive. This area was considered a blighted part of Racine's inner city and was demolished by the city of Racine in 1992, as part of the State Street Revitalization Program. The commercial buildings along State Street that were razed included 1503, 1509, 1513, and 1515 State Street.
Two plots on the site, separated by a side street that was later removed, were sold to Redmond Commercial Developments. By November 1992, Walgreens was negotiating with the city of Racine to move its central Racine location from 403 Main Street downtown to a new building on the State Street site.[2] The new store opened on March 7, 1994, followed by a grand opening ceremony at 8 a.m. on March 9.[3][4]
On July 31, 1996, a car driving through the nearby intersection jumped the curb and knocked over a light pole into the Walgreens parking lot. The driver of the car was found to have recently suffered a gunshot wound and later died from her injuries.[5]
