Globe Shopping City
Globe Shopping City, also known as Globe Discount City, was a regional chain of discount department stores based in Houston, Texas that operated from 1960 to 1978. Founded as the discounting arm of the Danburg's department store chain, Globe and its parent company United Mercantile were acquired by the Walgreen Company in 1962. The chain operated 31 locations in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Arizona, and also briefly had two stores in Memphis, Tennessee. Walgreens shut down the Globe chain in July 1978, with a number of the former Globe stores becoming Kmart and FedMart locations, with FedMart selling many of the buildings to Target and Mervyn's shortly thereafter.
