The store opened on November 22, 1971 as the first Kmart in the Lower Rio Grande Valley area, and was one of seven stores to open that day for a total of 484 overall. It was also tied with Kmart 4466 for the 41st Kmart in Texas.[1] In 1991, the store would be expanded from a pre-1972 full-size model Kmart, with a grand re-opening ceremony on November 14 of that year.[2] By the end of 1999, the store would be converted to Big Kmart. The store ultimately closed on April 11, 2020. It was the last Kmart in Texas to close.[3]
